A bar in Baltimore- Saturday night

Sia hadn't cared much about her birthday in the past, and she wasn't sure she cared now. But, she really shouldn't have gotten to this birthday, and it was a milestone which meant nothing at home, and it was just days before graduation in Fandom. Once she'd managed to swing a couple days when no one would be looking for her that hard, she more or less had to come back, right?

A few people had been invited. Nothing big, and anyone was welcome to come and go as they pleased, though she had managed to find a bar that wasn't completely insane tonight.

And as she came back from opening a tab, Sia asked, "Why would they beg us not to order margaritas?"

"Cinco de Mayo," Sparkle guessed. "It's kind of like Saint Patrick's Day in that everyone goes to bars and pretends to actually care about someone else's culture by getting shitface-drunk on the stereotypical booze of whatever nation they're appropriating and then acting like idiots all around town."

It wasn't really a big thing in Canada, not like St. Paddy's Day was, but he was a twenty-year-old with a decent fake ID and the internet. He'd noticed.

"I'm willing to put money on the odds that some asshole is going to come in here wearing a poncho and a big hat, too."

"I don't understand the point if it. That doesn't even sound fun," said Sia.

You know. Since she was a girl well-versed in fun.

[myownface]

"Well, people tend to treat holidays like that like big parties," Sparkle replied with a shrug. "Big themed parties that they can take and treat however they want. I'm sure it actually means something somewhere. We're just not in that place."

He glanced toward the bar.

"Here, it's just margaritas."

[notconflicted]

"I suppose it could be worse. And I doubt anyone here woukd be ordering margaritas for the holiday anyway."

Maybe Cade. Just to be Cade.

Sparkle had no doubt Cade would do anything just to be Cade. Especially after the bartender specifically begged for them not to.

"I don't think anyone here really celebrates the holiday," Sparkle agreed. "So there's not really any reason to, is there?"

Unless someone just happened to like margaritas.

[notconflicted]

"Unless they're drunk and obnoxious."

Again, Cade.

[myownface]

Sparkle just raised his eyebrows and smirked a little at that.

"I mean, considering the people you invited, it's mostly just a miracle we're at a bar and not trying to steal zoo animals or something."

Still Cade.

But also Atton and Sparkle.

[notconflicted]

"Yes, because I planned it and there will be no stealing of anything while I'm around," Sia said. "Afterwards, I know better than to say 'don't do it.'"

[myownface]

"But I promise to tell you all about how it went wrong once we do," Sparkle said, holding up one hand in a sort of 'scouts honour' salute.

Which was funny if only because Sparkle had never been in Scouts.

[notconflicted]

"You would still try, even knowing it would be unsuccessful?" Sia asked.

Also she dhdbt know what that gesture meant anyway.

[myownface]

"That's half the fun," Sparkle admitted. "There was one time we actually came really close to getting this tree goat thing? And we decided to leave it behind anyway."

The other half of the fun was apparently in just knowing they could if they wanted to. And nobody really wanted to keep a goat on their ship or anything.

Sia frowbed, and debated whether she wanted to ask or not.

"...Tree goat thing?"

Apparently she did.

[myownface]

"Yeah," Sparkle replied with a shug. "They hang upside-down from trees."

A pause.

"None of us even had a tree, so it's probably for the best we left it behind."

Even if Sparkle had really really wanted it.

[shutupandkillsomething]

"Spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarkle," Cade wheedled, "come drink my shitty margarita. It's cucumber."

And jalapeno. So much jalapeno.

[myownface]

Mean, Cade.

"... Who the hell puts cucumber in a margarita?"

It needed friends. Jalapeno friends. But Sparkle did not yet suspect this turn of events, no.

"Weirdos," Cade said, shoving over his glass. "It's got grass in it, too. Or something."

Cilantro.

[myownface]

Sparkle peered down at the glass in front of him.

"Cilantro," he supplied. He was helpful like that. "Which is great if you like the taste of soap."

Fortunately, Sparkle wasn't one to be turned off of free alcohol by a little bit of soapy grass. He shrugged, picked up the glass, and took a mouthful.

...

And swallowed.

"Wasn't expecting that," he managed, wincing one eye and looking back down at what was left of the drink.

"Good, huh?"

Don't piss off the bartender, Cade. Learn this lesson.

"Delicious," Sparkle said. In no way was he wheezing a little. Honest.

In fact, he was taking a second mouthful. While his nose was already running.

They make good choices!

"There's lots," Cade said. "I got a pitcher."

[myownface]

"I'm gonna kill that pitcher," Sparkle informed Cade. Very seriously. Already wondering if he had any good antacids at home.

They were the best at making choices.

"Then we can go to a zoo!"

Cade, no.

[myownface]

"There aren't any zoos open this time of night," Sparkle mused.

As if that would somehow stop them.

[shutupandkillsomething]

"That has not stopped us before!" Cade proclaimed. "Drink more grass. It'll make sense then."

[myownface]

"Things always make sense after more grass," Sparkle laughed, lifting up the glass and downing the rest of the contents. "God, this shit is terrible."
