Coruscant- Saturday

Apparently when an empress had a lightsaber injury, the medical droids weren't too keen on letting her out right away. There were still treatments and observation, and for as much as Sia wanted to complain, she actually felt like she still needed to be in here. But there were still things she needed to do, and when Antares came to check on her, she asked him to get Ania.

Sia heard her ask Antares, "Is… how is she?" once she got to the door, and she actually seemed concerned.

"I am… well enough," Sia told her herself, waving her in. "Bacta is not as pleasant as it looks. But I didn't ask you here to complain about my situation. I wanted to thank you for what you did for the galaxy, and for me."

Ania looked surprised right back, but didn't say anything for once.

"You know," Sia continued, "you have all the qualities that could make you a real leader. That is, with some refinement. Courage and loyalty aren't things that can be taught, but they are the only things that really matter to me when I'm picking the captain of my personal guard."

Ania blinked. "Oh! I… I don't think…"

"You don't have to answer now. But I would like to reward you for what you've done."

"There isn't much I need," Ania said, and added slowly, "But Jao is a different story. Permission to speak freely, Empress?"

Sia braced herself, but nodded. She knew she had to take her licks, and she'd seen this one coming.

"Jao did everything he did because he had a vision or whatever, and was just trying to save you. And for that, he got arrested, condemned, chased around the galaxy like a criminal, almost turned into a Sith according to him, and he still came back to save your butt," Ania began. "So what does he get for all of that?"

"Whatever he wants," Sia answered.

"What if he wants to leave?"

Sia paused. "When an Imperial Knights takes an oath, it's for life."

"Yeah, that's what got him sentenced to death, even when he was acting as an Imperial Knight," Ania reasoned. "So if he's already gotten the sentence, shouldn't that give him an out?"

Honesty, Ania had a point, though Sia couldn't help but think that if she'd been in Jao's position, she would still serve regardless, because that was what she'd signed up for.

But she'd also be lying if she said that she'd never considered being able to get away from it all. Choose a different path than the one she'd been born onto, find a different way to serve the Empire. There'd never been a time she would actually do it… and now she was doubting herself constantly in a situation where many more people ended up suffering because of her choices. So what would happen, what kind of Knight would Jao be, if he stayed because he was forced?

"Does he want to leave?" Sia asked finally.

Ania shrugged. "I have an idea, but I haven't asked. Feels like that should be up to him."

Yes. It should. "Very well," Sia said.

"Wait, seriously?" Ania asked, startled. "You'd let him go?"

"There are some traditions that should really be revisited," Sia explained. "Perhaps we should start here."

[Taken from Legacy vol 2, #18, though I had to add a ton because important scenes in this book are half a page long. And I have no more Legends to adapt. :( ]
